Judge and Examiner Designs
Judge (or examiner) designs exploit the quasi-random assignment of cases to decision-makers who vary in their treatment propensity. When cases are assigned to judges, patent examiners, disability adjudicators, or caseworkers through a process that is as-if random (conditional on time and location), the decision-maker's leniency serves as an instrument for the treatment they impose.
